The project continues to break ground with TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines) powering through, including completion of the Northolt Tunnels, and the first Bromford Tunnel breakthrough connecting Warwickshire and Birmingham. These works are central to HS2’s ability to deliver faster, more reliable services and to reduce journey times.
Station & Platform Upgrades: Meeting Future Demand
Simultaneously, significant station and platform projects are in motion to cope with rising passenger numbers and expectations. The Beaulieu Park station near Chelmsford is one example. It’s the first new station on the Great Eastern Main Line in about a century, with three platforms, planned to open in October 2025. The objective is to serve new housing developments and improve connectivity in that region.
Another project to keep an eye on is the Elephant & Castle Tube station upgrade in London. TfL has appointed Dragados UK to deliver critical passenger tunnels that will connect the new station box with existing platforms and over bridge. This work is part of a broader capacity upgrade, including step-free access, a new entrance and ticket hall. The station is being reconfigured to meet predicted demand growth of 25-40% by 2041.

New Builds with Strategic Importance
Beyond tunnels and upgrades, there are new builds that promise to reshape rail infrastructure geography. Cambridge South station, intended to serve the Biomedical Campus and adjacent communities, is under construction and expected to open in early 2026. It’s being designed for high integration with active travel and public transport, promoting walking, cycling and transit as part of the access strategy.
Also, the Old Oak Common superhub remains a project to watch. Although some delays persist, it’s designed to be one of the UK’s largest rail interchanges, combining HS2 platforms with multiple other lines. The underground station box with multiple platforms and supporting tunnels is integral in linking HS2 with other services.

These large-scale projects depend heavily on robust design contracts, mechanical & electrical systems (M&E), and tunnel and lineside systems. For example, Costain was recently awarded a substantial contract (circa £400 million) for HS2 to supply tunnel and lineside M&E systems. This includes design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of critical services inside the tunnels and open sections alike.
Design firms like AECOM are also playing pivotal roles: in the Elephant & Castle project they are leading the design for station box and tunnelling connections and stakeholder/environmental work, ensuring not just engineering feasibility but also good environmental practice and community integration.

What to Watch: Delivery & Timelines
While many projects are progressing well, there are several aspects and potential pitfalls to monitor. Timelines are tight; several stations and platforms are scheduled for completion by 2025-2026 (e.g. Beaulieu Park, Cambridge South), but delays in planning, funding or construction risk pushing back these delivery dates.
Impact on communities and connectivity will also be a key metric. Projects like Elephant & Castle aim not just at engineering upgrades, but at improving accessibility, supporting housing growth, and regenerating areas. The design, materials, and environmental impact (e.g. tunnelling under sensitive areas or integrating sustainable transport) will influence how “fit for future†these infrastructures are.
Finally, cost control, stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance (including safety, environmental and planning permissions) will likely be under greater scrutiny as the scale of these projects draws public attention and financial pressure.
